November 15th, 2015 WELCOME TO THE LONG NIGHTS OF BEER

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (November 15, 2015) – If you have a beer “sweet tooth,” then the Long Nights variety pack is for you.

The latest variety12-pack from Stevens Point Brewery features four unique brews that will appeal especially to those beer lovers who enjoy the sweeter side of the craft beer scene: Malted Milk Shake Lager, Pistachio Nut Brown Ale, Gingerbread Ale and Salted Caramel Toffee Ale. Available at retail from November through the end of January wherever Point’s handcrafted beers are sold, the Long Nights variety pack contains three 12-ounce longneck bottles of each new brew.

These are not traditional winter seasonals, according to Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins. “The Long Nights beers are handcrafted dessert-style beers brewed to be sweeter by emphasizing their maltiness, not their hop bitterness. They feature flavors typically not found in winter beers,” he said.

The Long Nights variety pack is the latest variety 12-pack from Stevens Point Brewery, which also produces a Harvest Craft Creations variety pack of flavored ales for the fall, the Long Days quartet of pale golden lagers with fresh fruit flavors for the summer, and a year-round IPA variety pack featuring four unique, hoppy India Pale Ales.

“Variety packs are just as popular with craft beer drinkers during the winter as they are in summer and fall, so we were planning for the Long Nights package long before our Long Days variety packs were sold out at retail last summer,” said Julie Birrenkott, Point Marketing Manager. “Variety packs are a great way to introduce innovative new beers that will resonate with craft beer lovers interested in exploring new flavors and styles.”

Introducing the Long Nights Beers

Malted Milk Shake Lager is a very dark lager that pairs well with anything chocolate. Brewed with wheat malt, chocolate malt, malted milk powder, and Topaz and Tettnanger hops, the beer is aged on a bed of cocoa nibs. “In addition, we actually add chocolate syrup at the back end, right before bottling,” Hopkins explained.

Pistachio Nut Brown Ale is a traditional mild brown ale featuring a blend of Victory malt, a lightly roasted malt that establishes the beer’s nutty character; caramel malt, which adds sweetness; and Palisade hops, an aroma variety from the Pacific Northwest. The pistachio nuts are added to the mash tun at the beginning of the brewing process after Point’s brewers grind them using a hand grinder. “The pistachio flavor really comes through, enhancing this ale’s nutty flavor and aroma,” Hopkins said.

Point Gingerbread Ale is a spicy ale, amber brown in color. The recipe includes chocolate and caramel malts, Perle and Tettnanger hops, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, all-spice and orange peel. Molasses added to the brew kettle brings it all together. “Molasses is a key ingredient in gingerbread and it’s a key ingredient in this ale, too,” Hopkins said. “Taking a sip of Point Gingerbread Ale is like taking a bite of a gingerbread cookie.”

Salted Caramel Toffee Ale is a golden-colored beer best described as a “trip to the candy store.” The beer is brewed with rich caramel malts and Mt. Hood hops, and a generous amount of real salted caramel is added to the brew kettle. “When you taste this beer, you will get the aroma and sweetness of the caramel on the back end, while the saltiness accentuates the caramel malt. This is a sweet beer, indeed,” Hopkins said.

Stevens Point Brewery

Stevens Point Brewery, founded in 1857, uses only the highest-grade barley malts, specialty malts, grains and the choicest hops to brew its handcrafted beers.

The Long Days variety pack offered four refreshing fruit lagers: Point Lime Lager, Point Mango Lager, Point Tart Cherry Lager and Point Watermelon Mojito Lager. Four unique year-round India pale ales – Point Spruce Tip IPA, Point Peach Mango IPA, Point White IPA and Point One Shot IPA – are available only in the Point IPA variety 12-pack introduced last year.

Year-round products include the Whole Hog Limited Edition “big beers:” Whole Hog Espresso Stout, Whole Hog Six-Hop India Pale Ale, Whole Hog Russian Imperial Stout, Whole Hog Barley Wine Ale and Whole Hog Scotch Ale. Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale is a fall seasonal.

The brewery’s seasonal beers include Point Oktoberfest, a Bavarian-style Märzen beer; Point St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a rich, dark beer available from November through February; Apricadabra Apricot Wheat Ale for the spring; and summer favorites Point Coast Radler, a mix of beer and natural citrus flavors, and Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat, an award-winning unfiltered wheat ale. Point also brews five unique James Page specialty beers sold only in convenient 12-ounce cans: A Cappella Gluten-free Pale Ale, Casper White Stout, Yhaba Dhaba Chai Tea Porter, Healani Pineapple Hefeweizen, and Bastian Black Forest Cake, a dark porter just introduced at retail.

Point’s Ciderboys Cider Co. hard ciders blend unexpected fresh fruit flavors with apple cider. October 06th, 2015 FALL FLAVORS ABOUND IN POINT’S NEW SEASONAL VARIETY PACK

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (October 6, 2015) – Toast the fall harvest season with four brand new seasonal ales available only in a new variety 12-pack from the Stevens Point Brewery.

The Harvest Craft Creations variety pack features four unique, fall-flavored ales perfect for celebrating the season: Point Cranberry Wheat Ale, Point Squash Ale, Point Pumpkin Peach Ale and Point Blood Orange Amber. Introduced at retail wherever Point’s handcrafted beers are sold, the Harvest Craft Creations variety pack contains three 12-ounce longneck bottles of each new brew.

American craft beer sales continue to show solid growth, up more than 17% in 2014, according to the Brewers Association, the craft brewing industry’s primary trade association. Variety packs are one of the most popular craft packages on the market – MarketWatch reports sales of seasonal variety packs grew 21% last year and accounted for about 10% of total U.S. craft beer volume.

“Variety packs offer a convenient, low-risk option for beer lovers to experiment with multiple different beer styles that catch their interest,” said Julie Birrenkott, Stevens Point Brewery’s Marketing Manager. “Our Long Days and Point IPA variety packs have enjoyed success in the marketplace, so offering our loyal fans a selection of creative, handcrafted fall seasonal beers was the logical next step.”

Brewing Harvest Craft Creations

With the new Harvest Craft Creations, Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins and his brewers have redefined the concept of fall seasonal beers, pushing the limits far beyond traditional fall styles like Oktoberfest lager and pumpkin ale.

Cranberry Wheat Ale is a beer born of love for Wisconsin’s fall cranberry harvest, source of more than half of the world’s cranberries. Brewed like a traditional Bavarian wheat beer with 50% white wheat malt and 50% two-row barley malt, Cranberry Wheat Ale features a splash of clarified Wisconsin cranberry juice that lends a slight touch of pink to the beer’s hue. Cascade and Sterling hops complete the recipe for this fruity fall ale. “It’s a very clean and crisp beer with a distinctively tart cranberry finish,” Hopkins said.

Squash Ale is a handcrafted blend of caramel malts, Topaz hops, sweet brown sugar, real maple syrup and butternut squash fermented with Point’s house ale yeast. The squash is added as a puree during the mashing process. “The caramel malts we use impart a nutty flavor to the beer, which has a medium amber color and a low hop profile,” Hopkins explained. “This flavorful beer will pair very well with traditional Thanksgiving fare like turkey, ham and stuffing.”

Pumpkin Peach Ale is a lighter bodied but dark amber beer brewed with pure pumpkin puree and caramel malts, and spiced with Perle hops, cloves, nutmeg and a pinch of cinnamon. “The peach juice we add during fermentation adds the sweet aroma of peach to the nose of the beer, and it finishes very clean with a peach note,” Hopkins said.

Blood Orange Amber is brewed with Vienna malt, caramel malt, Tettnang and Hallertau hops from Germany and a generous dose of freshly squeezed blood-red orange juice from Florida blood oranges. “Blood Orange Amber delivers an assertive but not overpowering sweet citrusy flavor that balances nicely with the maltiness of the beer,” Hopkins reported.

Stevens Point Brewery, founded in 1857, uses only the highest-grade barley malts, specialty malts, grains and the choicest hops to brew its handcrafted beers.

The Harvest Craft Creations variety pack is Stevens Point Brewery’s third variety 12-pack. The Long Days variety pack introduced for the summer of 2015 featured four refreshing fruit lagers: Point Lime Lager, Mango Lager, Tart Cherry Lager and Watermelon Mojito Lager. Four unique year-round India pale ales – Point Spruce Tip IPA, Point Peach Mango IPA, Point White IPA and Point One Shot IPA – are available only in the Point IPA variety 12-pack introduced last year.

July 16th, 2015 CHAMPIONS OF BEER AND HARD CIDER, TOO!

STEVENS POINT, WIS. (July 16, 2015) – Stevens Point Brewery’s extensive collection of beer medals grew again at the annual U.S. Open Beer Championship. The annual competition’s expert judges awarded the craft brewer a Gold medal for Whole Hog Espresso Stout, Silver medals for Point Special Lager and JP’s Casper White Stout, and four Bronze medals.

Proof that coffee and beer are made for each other, Whole Hog Espresso Stout won the top award in the Coffee Beer category. Brewed with whole Sumatra coffee beans and a special proprietary blend of espresso beans supplied by Milwaukee’s Valentine Coffee Roasters, the year-round beer is available in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles and on draft wherever Whole Hog products are sold.

Point Special Lager won the American Premium Lager category’s Silver medal. It’s a repeat for Point’s flagship beer, a classic, full-bodied American-style lager that also won the Silver in the category at the 2012 U.S. Open Beer Championship.

JP’s Casper White Stout received Silver in the Experimental Beer category. This amber-colored brew from Point’s James Page family of beers is aged for two weeks with coffee beans and cocoa nibs to create its classic stout roasted character. Available only in six-packs of 12-ounce cans and on draft, JP’s Casper White Stout’s authentic stout flavor is enhanced by hints of white chocolate imparted by the cocoa nibs.

The judges in the popular annual competition sponsored by BeerInfo.com also bestowed the following medals:

Ciderboys First Press, a traditional hard cider, won Bronze in the English Cider category, one of eight categories in the U.S. Beer Open Championship’s hard-cider judging, now in its second year. First Press is available year round in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles, 12-packs of convenient 12-ounce cans, and on draft. Ciderboys Grand Mimosa, an unexpected blend of pure orange juice and apple cider, was awarded Bronze in the Fruit Cider category. A winter seasonal made with California oranges and cider from fresh Washington State apples, Grand Mimosa’s tempting orange hue is nearly identical to the classic grand mimosa cocktail combining champagne with orange juice JP’s Yhaba Dhaba Chai Tea Porter, a traditional sweet porter, earned the Bronze medal in the Herb and Spice Beer category. After fermentation, JP’s Yhaba Dhaba Chai Tea Porter is infused with a chai tea blend from India, where a “dhaba” is a truckstop-style roadside restaurant. Like JP’s Casper White Stout, JP’s Yhaba Dhaba Chai Tea Porter is available only in six-packs and 12-packs of 12-ounce cans and on draft. Point Premium Root Beer earned the Bronze medal in the Non-Alcoholic Root Beer category for the second year in a row. Made with 100% real sugar, Point Premium Root Beer is handcrafted in small batched with pure Wisconsin water, genuine Wisconsin honey and all-natural vanilla. Rich, creamy and caffeine free, Point Premium Root Beer is available in four-packs of 12-ounce non-returnable bottles.

U.S. Open Beer Championship

Like the Stevens Point Brewery’s medal collection, the U.S. Open Beer Championship also is growing. This year’s competition in Oxford, Ohio, featured nearly 4,000 beers and ciders in 85 categories, up from 700 beers and ciders in 50 categories in 2010.

The championship held every Fourth of July is actually an international event. In addition to U.S. and Canadian brewers, this year’s event attracted entries from Australia, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, England, Finland Germany, Mexico, Scotland, Sweden and Venezuela.

“To participate in a premiere, high-profile beer event like the U.S. Open Beer Championship is a privilege,” said Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner medals. “To win medals, especially a gold one, in head-to-head competition with many exceptional entries from around the world is an honor that reaffirms our commitment to brewing the finest handcrafted specialty beers and ciders. The U.S. Open Beer Championship is a celebration of craft brewing, and the recognition our handcrafted beers and ciders gain from participating and winning is priceless.”

At last year’s U.S. Open Beer Championship, Point won Gold medals for Point St. Benedict’s Winter Ale and Ciderboys Peach County hard cider, Silver for Ciderboys First Press and Bronze for Point Premium Root Beer.

June 02nd, 2015 PUT A SMILE ON WITH POINT SMILEY BLUE PILS

STEVENS POINT, WIS. (June 2, 2015) – Craft beer lovers will be all smiles when they taste Point Smiley Blue Pils, the newest year-round brew from the Stevens Point Brewery.

An authentic Czech-style pilsner, Smiley Blue Pils is now available for relaxation and refreshment in six-packs and 12-packs of 12-ounce longneck bottles and 12-packs of 12-ounce cans wherever Point’s handcrafted beers are sold.

Pilsner, or pils for short, is one of the world’s classic beer styles. Named for the famous Czech brewing town of Pilsen in Bohemia where the style was first brewed using bottom fermenting yeast in the mid-19th century, pilsners were the world’s first pale golden lagers. Pilsners are characterized by a fragrant hop aroma, a soft but sturdy body and a deliciously dry, hop-accented finish.

“Pilsner is one of the most popular beer styles in the world and it makes perfect sense for Point to expand our offering with a handcrafted true pilsner beer like Smiley Blue Pils,” said Joe Martino, Point Brewery Operating Partner. “Our new Smiley Blue Pils is an excellent example of the pilsner style and Point fans will be all smiles when they taste it. We think it will quickly become a favorite.”

Brewing Smiley Blue Pils

Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins and his team of craft brewers brew Smiley Blue Pils with traditional pilsner malt and Saaz hops imported from the Czech Republic. The Saaz hops are a key ingredient for Czech-style pilsners, which tend to be hoppier than German-style pilsners. The Point team is generous with the Saaz hops when they brew Point Smiley Blue Pils, which is also dry hopped after fermentation to enhance its hoppiness.

“The Saaz hops give Smiley Blue Pils a pleasant, peppery nose and a crisp dry finish,” said Hopkins. “It’s very well balanced and a satisfying, easy-to-drink session beer. It’s a great fit with the rest of our craft beers, and we are really proud of it.”

January 07th, 2015 POINT BREWERY ON A WINNING STREAK

STEVENS POINT, Wis. January 7, 2015 – Following another year of solid growth in 2014, in 2015 the Stevens Point Brewery will create more new jobs and invest $1.5 million in brewery renovations and upgrades to improve quality and help production keep up with consumer demand.

The improvements include a new can filler, new brewing and quality control equipment such as a 300-barrel bright beer tank used for conditioning beer, and renovations to the brewery’s popular gift shop. The brewery also plans to hire two more salespeople and another quality control technician, according to Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner.

“We enjoyed another successful year in 2014 as our production volume was up double digits, with particularly strong sales of our Ciderboys hard ciders,” Martino reported. “Investing in our people and infrastructure to ensure our production capacity keeps up with consumer demand is a key ingredient in our recipe for continued growth. We are looking forward to another exciting year for our brewery”

Work on the gift shop renovation as well as improvements in other areas of the brewery will begin in January. The projects will conclude in May with the installation and startup of the new can filler just in time for summer, the beer industry’s peak season for sales. The can filler will greatly expand Point’s can-packaging capabilities, especially for 16-ounce cans, which represent one of the hottest packaging trends in the craft beer market. The brewery’s current 16-ounce can packages include Point Special Lager’s popular “Big Charlie” 16-ounce can and the summer seasonal, Nude Beach 16-ounce can.

“We expect more and more craft beer lovers to embrace can packages and we want to be able to offer the widest possible range of packaging choices for our loyal fans,” Martino said. “The new can filler is the right piece of new equipment at the right time.”

This year marks the sixth consecutive year of major expansions at the Point Brewery. Between 2010 and 2014 the brewery invested more than $7 million, including $1.5 million last year for electrical and cooling systems upgrades, bottle filler upgrades and more new unitanks for fermenting and aging beer. And 2015 is the second year in a row the brewery has created jobs: last year it added 10 new positions, including six in its busy packaging department.
